Traffic Signal Upgrades to help Decrease Branson Traffic Congestion

The City of Branson along with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has just received a $334,800 grant that will enable the agencies to upgrade all 25 traffic signals across Branson that will help decrease traffic congestion, improve citizen safety and reduce greenhouse emissions due to idling traffic.

This grant, provided by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will utilize Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) in traffic signals. This new technology will modernize traffic signals by providing high-resolution data to actively manage performance and improve safety and customer service while cutting congestion and costs.

Once the signals have been upgraded, the MoDOT traffic signals and the Branson traffic signals will integrate cross-jurisdictionally to the Transportation Management Center (TMC) of the Ozarks in Springfield. Traffic engineers working at the TMC will then be able to actively monitor traffic and communicate with the Branson’s transportation team to adjust traffic signal operations in real-time, enabling coordination and optimization across both jurisdictions.

This new technology has been tested at one intersection in Branson. The one-year pilot resulted in 49 real-time traffic signal alerts which proactively informed Branson’s Engineering Department of various signal issues. Branson’s traffic team was able to remotely diagnose issues, prioritize resources and respond more efficiently. This saved time and money for the department and also contributed to a safer intersection.

Other state transportation departments and local agencies are interested in ASTPM and this project will provide a roadmap for implementation and adoption of ATSPM solutions in other jurisdictions across the Country.
